Sainik School Kunjpura Karnal (Haryana) is one of the pioneer educational institutions established in the country in 1961 at the behest of the then Defense Minister, Shri VK Krishna Menon. The School is located in district Karnal and thus has the singular honour of being in the land of ‘Mahabharat’ where Lord Krishna discoursed and enlightened ‘Arjuna’ with the knowledge of ‘Geeta’. Sainik School Kunjpura is located Ten Kms from the heart of the city of Karnal and Seven Kms off the National Highway No 1 ( Sher Shah Suri Marg). Far from the madding crowd it stands majestically sprawled on 276 acres of lush green environment.
The School main building was originally the mansion of the Nawab of Kunjpura, Mohammad Ibrahim Ali Khan. It was built in 1900 AD to house the marriage party of his daughter. It has 365 doors and windows said to signify the number of days in a year. It has four corridors meeting at a vantage point to represent the four seasons of the year. Shri VK Krishna Menon, the then Union Defence Minister inaugurated Sainik School Kunjpura on 24 July 1961. Gradually over a period of time a number of additions were made – Junior Block, Infirmary, the Cadets Mess, the Manekshaw Auditorium, the Simon Squash Court, the Swimming Pool and the residential area of the staff and the boys but the Main building still remains the ‘nerve centre’ of the school with the administrative block housed in it. Senior classrooms, Computer Cell, Library, Motivation Hall, Staff Room, etc are also located in the Main Building.
The primary aim of this institution is to prepare boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, Pune. The school also aims to bring Public School Education within the reach of common man and economically weaker sections of society. One of the main objectives is also to prepare those cadets who fail to join NDA, for coveted careers elsewhere. Besides preparing the boys for entry into NDA, the school prepares them for Secondary and Senior Secondary Examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education.
The Sainik School Society, which falls under the purview of the Ministry of Defence, exercises functional control, while a Local Board of Administration under the Chairmanship of the Chief of Staff, Headquarters, 2 Corps oversees the efficient conduct of all day-to-day affairs of the school. The school meets its financial responsibilities from the scholarship money and Grants-in-Aid given by the Government of Haryana.
To effectively implement the training programme and to achieve the aforesaid aims and objectives, there is a set and well-oiled pattern of administration. The Principal, the Headmaster and the Registrar are officers from the active service of the Armed Forces on deputation to the Sainik Schools Society. The Senior Master who assists the Headmaster in efficient discharge of his duties is usually the senior most member of the academic staff. The students of classes VII to XII are administered through the House system. All students are allocated to one of four houses known as Chillianwala, Kurukshetra, Panipat and Thaneshwar. Each House is looked after a by House Master, Tutors and Hostel Superintendent who look after the maintenance of dormitories/hostels and cadets management. The Sub-Juniors, the fresh entrants of Class-VI, are kept in Holding Houses named as Chhamb and Shakargarh. The prefectorial system is the touchstone of any residential school. The students actively participate in the school administration. The School Captain and Vice Captain are selected from the senior most class i.e. class XII. Then there are the House Captains and the Prefects who look after their respective houses not only inside the dormitories but also in the play fields and elsewhere proper discipline is to be maintained. This system also brings to the fore qualities of leadership in young students and they learn at very young age to shoulder responsibilities and take command of situations.
Modern teaching methods and a variety of both conventional and electronic training aids, like Over Head Projectors, Audio Video Player, VCD players, LCD Projectors, etc are used to make teaching more interesting and effective. It being a Boarding School, the students as well as the teachers live within the campus and interaction between the teachers and taught takes place even during the non-teaching hours.
